Students, what are you doing this summer
—summer camp, summer school, just hanging out?
Now picture a different scenario – one where you are one of the first students to
take a Discovery Student Adventure. During the summer of 2010, Discovery
Education will offer its first ever international, student trips. You may have
interacted with Discovery Education services in your classroom or watched one of
our many shows on TV, so now imagine taking a trip through the eyes of
Discovery. Envision yourself in South Africa, immersed in the ocean in a shark
cage. You can see the beady eyes of the great white shark. Imagine your feeling
of pride as you emerge out of the water – you did it! Or find out what it will
feel like to spend the day in an orphanage in China, engaging with the kids, so
eager to get attention and practice their English. You just changed a life for
the better, and perhaps yourself along the way. Now you are back at school,
talking about your summer. Bet you no one else will have a comparable summer
experience. Your parents will of course want to know all the reasons that a
Discovery Student Adventure trip is right for you.
Here are a few reasons you can share with them:
- Provides you with a unique opportunity to explore your world with engaging and
educational activities – you truly get to experience the destination in a way
the average tourist could not.
- Opens your mind to other people, cultures and ideas, giving you a new
perspective of the world and of yourself. You have probably heard of many other
cultures and how they live. Now see it for yourself. Understand what it means.
- Provides real world learning experiences, integrating lesson plans and
activities developed by Discovery Education. Your parents will like the fact
that while you are enjoying your summer, you are learning too. You will like
that it won’t feel like learning, just fun.
- Brings together students from all over. The friendships you make on these trips
will be special, meaningful and long-lasting.
- Helps you stand out from the thousands of others applying to college. Your trip
makes the perfect subject for the type of college essay that gets noticed, and
just might make all the difference.
- Enables you to earn community service hours, often needed for high school
graduation. And, why not earn some high school credits while engaging in one of
the most exciting summers of your life? With some pre-trip preparation and a
commitment to the trip, earning high school credits is possible for students
entering 9th through 12th grade.
